Purpose
The NY Foundation Scholarship Program is established exclusively to further the Foundation’s charitable and educational mission by supporting individuals who demonstrate a commitment to animal welfare, veterinary medicine and public benefit, with a special emphasis on emergency and shelter medicine.
General Eligibility (All Applicants)
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to animal welfare and veterinary medicine.
(Preference is given to candidates with experience in emergency medicine or shelter medicine.)
- Must attend or be accepted into an accredited program in the mainland United States.
- Must provide all required documentation (see below)
- Must maintain GPA requirements to remain eligible and to reapply for future awards
- Must reside in or attend school in one of the Foundation’s eligible states (see below)
Veterinary Students
- Accepted into an accredited U.S. veterinary school.
- Preference for those with ER or shelter medicine experience.
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.7 at the time of initial application.
- Must maintain a 3.0 GPA to reapply for subsequent years.
Veterinary Technicians
- Accepted into an accredited U.S. veterinary technician school.
- Preference for those with an interest in ER or shelter medicine.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
- Must maintain a 3.0 GPA to reapply for subsequent years.
- Only in-person programs are eligible (online-only programs do not qualify.)
Veterinary Practice Managers
- A donation may be made to the VHMA Scholarship program for the Certified Veterinary Practice Managers
- The donation amount is determined annually based on available funds.
Application Components (All Applicants)
- Completed Scholarship Application Form (provided by the Foundation).
- Current Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume.
- Official or unofficial academic transcripts verifying GPA.
- Proof of acceptance or enrollment in an accredited program.
- One letter of recommendation from a veterinary professional, professor, or supervisor.
- Personal Statement (500-750 words) addressing:
- Why you chose this career path.
- How your emergency or shelter medicine experience has shaped your goals.
- How you will contribute to animal welfare, veterinary team support, access to care, and strengthening the human-animal bond.
Please Note: You will be able to upload the required documents at the end of the application.
- Recipients are selected by a committee appointed by the Foundation’s Board, based on academic achievement, commitment to animal welfare, relevant experience, and the quality of application materials.
- Financial need may be considered.
- The Foundation does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, or any other protected status in the selection of scholarship recipients.
- Scholarship funds must be used for tuition, books, fees, and other educational expenses.
- Recipients may be required to provide proof of enrollment and submit periodic progress reports
- The Foundation reserves the right to determine the scholarship amount and the number of recipients annually.
- Scholarships may be renewed annually (or per semester for veterinary technicians) if GPA and enrollment requirements are met.
- The Foundation reserves the right to revoke any scholarship if the recipient fails to meet eligibility requirements or provides false information.
